Why Every Wedding Needs Confetti

by | Jul 11, 2016

I’ll be honest right from the start of this feature – I LOVE confetti at weddings. There’s nothing to beat beautiful, delicate, colourful confetti showering down like nature’s best wishes on a newly married couple. This post is unashamedly written in praise of confetti – I’m going to share some tips and ideas plus there’s also some expert advice from one of my favourite photographers who also believes that every wedding needs confetti!

From the Italian word for ‘sweets’, confetti originally started out being thrown at festivals on the continent before making its way to Britain just before 1900. It’s a symbolic way for guests to bestow health and prosperity on the newly married couple but practically, it’s just a lot of fun!

Petal confetti is, in my opinion, the absolute best. It’s natural and oh-so pretty, it doesn’t stain or create a sticky, slippy mess in the way that bubbles sometimes can and, unlike rice and even some dried floral varieties, petals are super soft and gentle. Petals also float down slowly making them perfect for the confetti shot.

Plenty of wedding gurus can’t get enough of this iconic wedding image (see this feature on Rock My Wedding for starters) and for photographers, it’s a must-have photo on their list too:

Hannah McClune
Hannah McClune Photography tells us why she loves it too.

“From a photographers perspective I ADORE confetti shots. The more that is thrown the better! That moment of elation when you have just got married is the perfect time to be greeted by your guests scattering petals over you.”

“Ask your photographers to help direct your ushers to where is best to set up a ‘faux aisle’ for you two to walk through. The lighting and any directions, as well as the church/venue restrictions will play a role here. I always walk ahead first and double check everyone has handfuls of confetti ready to throw once you get level with them- and remind them to throw it up high to fall down over you – not straight at you and into your laughing mouth!! They really do make the most colourful, action and happiness filled pictures. Enjoy!”

When my couples request confetti, I have to admit that I do a little dance of joy. I select petals that absolutely fit with the colour scheme of the day and pack them carefully into various bags, cones and containers ready to be given to guests when the moment is right. I can also devise fully styled confetti tables that give proper importance to this wedding essential! Ideally, it’s best to make sure each guest has enough confetti for two handfuls; giving the photographer two chances for capture the perfect moment. After all, getting married is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion so you really should make the most of it!
